I recently moved to Tennessee, not far from Oak Ridge. Having read Richard Rhode’s books about the Manhattan Project and the making of the bomb, I realized that I had learned very little about the role of Oak Ridge in the project. I bought City Behind a Fence with the expectation of learning more. What I discovered as I read was that this is a book written by historians, but from a perspective of community planning, and its sociological implications, while including very little about the function of Oak Ridge in the development of nuclear weapons. It was clear from many of the other reviews, that this is a book with much appeal to those who lived at Oak Ridge during the war years, and it has genuine nostalgic value for some. If like me, you are looking for a book about Oak Ridge’s participation in and contributions to the Manhattan Project, this is not the book you're looking for.

City Behind A Fence Oak Ridge Tennessee 19421946 (Audible Audio Edition) Charles W Johnson Charles O Jackson Steve Williams University Press Audiobooks Books Reviews
Very interesting story about early Oak Ridge and the secrecy surrounding its development.A little too full of sociological stats for me,but all in all I enjoyed it.
As someone who grew up in Oak Ridge, I was amazed at how much I didn't know about the place. The pictures were great additions and I liked the way the book was broken up into sections. Some parts were more interesting than others, but I think that was just my personal preference. The personal stories at the end were a nice touch too.
Much information about Oak Ridge, TN, the mission there and the Manhattan Project.
I spent 1944 - 1951 in Oak Ridge as a little girl. My mom and I moved there when I was 18 months old. My dad was in the Army in Europe at that time. When my dad came home, he got a job at K-25. I enjoyed reading this book because of my earlier childhood experiences living there. We moved to Norris in 1953 and my dad worked at Y-12 until he retired. This book is great and very fascinating reading of Oak Ridge.
Even though I lived in Oak Ridge from about 1944 until I graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1953, there were so many things in City Behind a Fence I never knew or dreamed about. It takes a very unusual book to make a person rewrite his/her own history. Many books have been written about Oak Ridge and the Manhattan project, but this one manages to show life on the "reservation" in a new light. Highly recommended.
A fairly-detailed accounting of one of the highest and best-kept secrets of WWII. Most people think of Los Alamos as being the only place doing work on atomic bombs/energy, although there were many places involved in the Manhattan Project. Nice to see books coming out of the untold stories of activities and people of WWII.
My parents moved to Oak Ridge about 1943, when I was 2 years old. I have some vivid memories of the early years there starting with our lives in a "flattop" which we lived in briefly, to more substantial housing in a home that was then the highest point in the city. We left at the end of the war then returned, at which time my dad taught school there. We visited the area in 1998, drove through the town but barely recognized it.
